What will the predicament of a woman be when her murderer husband, believed to be dead, resurfaces after many years as a full fledged head of a robber gang? What will she tell her grown-up son who is a CID officer now? This is the situation faced by Sivakami (Pandribai), mother of Maran (M.G.R.). Her husband Karunakaran, a compulsive gambler, accidentally kills the brother of a police officer and escapes. He is believed to be dead and Sivakami brings up Maran, telling him that his father was a law abiding citizen. But as fate would have it, Maran falls in love with Mekala (Saroja Devi), the daughter of the slain police officer. Mekala refuses to go ahead with the marriage when she comes to know the truth. Now Sivakami has to convince Mekala, hide the identity of his own father from Maran and also save her husband from the police.
